Sizzling screens
Anna Phelan

You scream, The Hulk screams, we all scream for ice cream!

For those of us who wait for the solstice before they label their movies "summer blockbusters"

Oddly enough, the two biggest summer blockbusters (for him and her) have both been released well in advance of the season's start. For him, we have the much-anticipated sequel in the story of an overaged womanizing intellectual and his illegitimate son and their adventures in the lands where immigrants come from (Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf in the eponymous Indy saga). For her, of course, there is the whiny follow-up in the story of four spoiled near-spinsters and their continued journey towards spiritual enlightenment, aided by the gods Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga (that would be Sex and the City, of course).

For those of us waiting for the solstice before applying the term "summer blockbuster," there are plenty of upcoming flicks to satisfy both movie lovers and sticklers for technicalities - with the exception of The Incredible Hulk, which misses the mark by about a week, released as it will be on June 13. The second stab at bringing the green giant to the big screen will focus more on good old-fashioned action scenes, as opposed to the "boring," cerebral stuff brought to the fore by artsy director Ang Lee. The new Hulk, directed by Louis Leterrier, stars Edward Norton (who also gets a co-screenwriting credit), Liv Tyler and Tim Roth, and promises lots of explosions and sure-fire (ha ha) mass destruction.

On July 11, Hellboy II: The Golden Army smashes into screens, with both Ron Perlman and Selma Blair reprising their roles in Guillermo del Toro's follow-up
to 2004's much-loved first Hellboy film.

Poor Heath Ledger will assume his last role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's (Memento, Batman Begins) The Dark Knight, set for release on July 18. This Batman flick boasts a seriously all-star cast, which also includes Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. After Indiana Jones, this is surely the summer's most desperately, heart-flutteringly awaited film.

Some other dates to mark your calendars with (depending on your tastes) are July 25 - X-Files 2 (actually starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, with Chris Carter directing) and Step Brothers (the next instalment in the Anchorman, Talladega Nights franchise, starring Will Ferrell) - and August 8: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, featuring four young stars of the small screen, which will satisfy TV-watching teenaged girls all over the world.

Of course, summer in Montreal wouldn't be, well, summer in Montreal if it weren't for the excellent free outdoor screenings, of which there will be plenty, though mostly not until August. The weekend of Aug. 15, Pop Montreal will again play host to the second annual Bollywood Bike-In, at the St-Ambroise Brewery, and Lafontaine Park's Théâtre de Verdure has lined up a number of great selections from this year's FIFA, including films on Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, and Jeanne Moreau. Finally, while the World Film Festival may be flagging, their Cinema Under the Stars series, presented this year in the new Quartier des Spectacles around PdA, promises to be an exciting way to close out the summer.

Only one Movie stands out from the rest...

And its the Dark Knight.
The question we have to ask now is how much money will it make, and by how much will it kill its competition?
Tickets are selling out 3 WEEKS b4 its released. Thats madness and has never happened before.
Theaters are trying to make more showings to accommodate the demand of this movie.
It is of course the sequel to Batman Begins, which was a great rebuilding of a broken franchise that had too many remakes. Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, this franchise went from joke to Oscar awards. Now being called a superhero movie for adults, Batman rejoins Gotham City for more crime solving action, especially against the dreadfully funny and creative Joker villain, played by the late Heath Ledger. Heath and the rest of the staff put so much hard work and intensity into this movie that it lead to his death. He was experiencing sleeping problems and accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs. This movie will be one of his last and thus it will also show the wonderful work of the actor and his will for making movies.

RIP Heath Ledger, and Everybody go out to see this movie, it's a must see!!!

These are sizzling choices?

The Incredible Hulk's CGI effects still look fake. Is recasting the franchise from the ground up supposed change the fact that the moment that we see the Hulk in action we're gonna keep telling ourselves that Lou Ferrigno did a more believable job with a bad wig and green body make-up? That's not even my biggest issue with any of these choices listed in the article--they're almost all sequels! I want to see Hellboy and Dark Knight as much as the next person but I can't be the only person to note that with the exception of Kungh Fu Panda coming out this week most of this summer's big blockbusters are sequels or remakes?
