Fantasia 2009: Final week standouts
Meghan Hicks

Brazilian horror master José Mojica Marins, a.k.a. Coffin Joe, lives on in Embodiment of Evil

Fantasia fans can almost breathe easy as this year's fest goes guns blazing, heads rolling into its final days

The end of Fantasia may bring about as much disappointment as sighs of relief and new eyeglasses prescriptions. But no time for a breather just yet - the closing week's lineup has many reasons to continue the cinematic marathon to the finish line.

Continuing in the tradition of killer kid movies is Tom Shankland's The Children. Two families, spending New Year's in the English countryside, barely settle in when the youngest members start acting very badly. It's uncertain, and perhaps unimportant, why the kids turn into Children of the Corn; this film is all about the effectively creepy atmosphere.

Best Worst Movie is an endearing documentary about the unfortunate stars and creators of cult curiosity Troll 2 (a film that makes Plan 9 look like a masterpiece), and the people that love it.

In I Sell the Dead, grave robber Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) recounts his misadventures with partner-in-crime Willie (Larry Fessenden). Quirky and comical, it feels like an extended chapter of Creepshow with the aesthetics (though not quite the sophistication) of a Hammer production.

Cool action flick Rough Cut follows real gangster Kang-pae and actor Soo-ta as they clash egos and fists on a film set. Another treat from Korea is Private Eye, a noir-esque feature complete with a murder mystery and unlikely friendship between a snoop
and a medical student.

Coffin Joe fans should grab a seat for Embodiment of Evil on Saturday night. Director/star José Mojica Marins will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to cult cinema. (Read the web exclusive interview with Marins at Hour.ca.)

A look back at the second week of FAntasia + Final week standout

The second week of Fantasia is over so here a look back at what i thought was the best and worst movies of this second week.

First of all, let's talk about the best movies; there wasn't a better movie this week then Fine, Totally fine. This by far the best comedy have seen in a long time and i highly recommend you catch the next screening of this movie on the 27th you won't regret it. Then since him talking about comedies, let's talk about Crush and Blush, again an original romantic comedy even if I would classify this more as an anti romantic comedy. The story is just beautifully told and you feel for these 2 rejects and the bond that is form between them. The next one on the list is Alien Trespass, simply because it was fun to see that even if it's 2009, we are still capable of filming a movie the way it was film in the 1950's and it didn't look ridiculous. Finally, The Documentary, Playing Columbine got to me a little bit. More or so because i've been a strong believer that the media was mostly responsible for all these school shooting by glorifying these shooter and targeting video-games and music as the principle reason why these shooting happens. If the medias would give them the time of day, maybe we would get this many shooting.

The worst movie of the week for me was La Marque, a little French Canadian movie about a cult who worships Satan trying to stop a guy from performing a ritual that would make him the most powerful man in the world. This was just a train wreck and i almost left before the end. I also herd that Canary was really bad but i didn't see it so i can't comment on it.

Has for this week, a lot of the can't miss movie are already sold out but you can still get ticket for Embodiment of evil, my dear enemy and Neighbours + I Sell The Dead and Trick R Treat which are sold out for their original dates will replay on July 30, so it a chance for those who didn't get tickets to see these 2 movies.

So have a good final week of fantasia.

La Marque a great film

I like to single out La Marque, A nice french Quebecois thriller that's produced with no money. I'm impressed with the visuals, the music and the acting. it's a bit to slow for my taste but kept me interested throughout the film. I particularly enjoyed the Q&A with the young director at the end of the presentation. *** 1/2 Great work, a good indicator that the Quebec Indie film production is on the right track.

cheers

~Fantasia 2009: VI~

Asleep at the wheel again I see. Ok, so I'll give you that I Sell the Dead, The Children and Embodiment of Evil deserve their plugs in this article but how about Fireball or the very much long awaited Trick 'r Treat or the animated gems Genius Party Beyond and Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers? Sorry but there are far more movies that deserved more attention than they got. As a genre fan and longtime Fantasia attendee I can tell you that that the media as a whole has only done the bare minimum to highlight this year's best versus the coverage the Jazz and Just For Laughs fests received.
