Some girls get it good

Angel's devils: Dhavernas, Walsh and Lewis

Angel befuddled in side-splitting teen comedy These Girls

Last week, if someone tried to convince me that David Boreanaz (TV's Angel) was a good actor, I would have spit on them, called them a liar and probably got into a full-on donnybrook (or not, but still...). Today, however, I am a changed man coming to terms with my erroneous preconceived notions. They say it takes a good actor to do comedy, and if that's true, Angel's got some chops, yo.

These Girls, from John Hazlett, is more than just a teen comedy, a sex comedy, a teen sex comedy, or any other permutations of those terms. Boasting a fine cast, highlighted by the always-impressive Montreal-born Caroline Dhavernas (from TV's Wonderfalls), These Girls is funny at times and quite serious at others, all the while effectively encapsulating the carefree, me-first days of youth. In it the titular girls, played by the captivating and über-sardonic Dhavernas, former MuchMusic VJ Amanda Walsh and newcomer Holly Lewis, have a conundrum. See, all of them are fucking the neighbourhood stud (Boreanaz) even though they're jailbait and he's 32 and married with a kid. Like all good friends, they eventually decide to share and share alike, blackmailing him into, ahem, servicing them. Complications ensue, of course, when Boreanaz, tired of the continual strain of being a glorified gas pump, plans his escape.

This is a funny, funny film. The unlikely mélange of Dhavernas's now-trademark sarcastic wit and Lewis's ultra-keen Bible-and-baseball nerd (akin to Alyson Hannigan's American
Pie
band geek) plays well against Boreanaz's befuddled, in-over-his-head hunk, whose facial expressions alone are worth the price of admission. Walsh, for her part, is ravishing throughout, despite the unevenness of her performance due to the character's stock quality. That said, the screenplay (adapted from Vivienne Laxdal's stage play) shows flashes of zip here and there, demonstrating a sharp understanding of the inner workings of the minds of young girls.

If good first impressions are as important as they say, then maybe I had my good favour button pushed during the opening credit sequence of These Girls. From Metric's Combat Baby, one of my favourite songs, to the quirky pastels and the high-school notebook scrawl announcing the players and the production team, I was hooked. But to only appreciate the film by way of its ephemeral details would be shortsighted. Sort of like the worldview of a trio of teenaged girls - old enough to know better yet still enamoured of the trappings of youthful naiveté.

Oh Caroline...

This is bottom of the barrel dreck. And it is unworthy of your precious time. I was left wondering how dave boreanaz who gradually elevated from he of the acting ability of plywood to, by the end of the Angel tv series, to he of the acting level of lettuce...still gets roles. There must be tone of actors who are just as good looking who can actually act. It strikes me as odd. Then, there is the case of our own Caroline Dhavernas who was rather sublime in eminently missed series Wonderfalls. What is she dong in crud like this. Fans of Mr. Boreanaz will see the film regardless of what critics say...kudos to them. But, those who are not ought to stay away. Far away as possible.

I loved this movie

The Girls is such a funny movie. The girls are great and I believe their characters truly portray todays teenagers. Girls are far more advanced sexually than ever before and the whole scenario is feasable. In my opinion David is probably the best looking man in the entertainment business and he is talented. He is damned funny. He is a great actor and he has honed his craft. I think this laugh out loud movie has heart and this hunk is so super believable as the pot head older man being pidgeon holed into having sex with these girls. I recommend it. It's fun and it's fresh. Entertainment is what it's all about and who isn't entertained looking at David Boreanaz. I would pay to be one of "these girls" lucky them. : )

Can't Wait for the DVD

I love David Boreanaz's acting and especially when he plays the comic guy. I can't wait for the DVD release in Australia so I can watch him again. Some reviews say this movie sucks, but I think that decision is up to the individual watching at the time.

Yeay! A controversy! I love it already! (3rd comment has spoilers)

Not only this moovies seems to rub the self righteous the wrong way, but it also had enough good stuff to lighten up the lives of those who are not afraid of living! Three cheers for everyone daring to create/participate in it - and thank you reviewer for giving us a taste of it.
Props to David Boreanaz for keeping off the beaten path and doing interesting, controversial work. More of this and the "geez, I didn't know he can act" remarks would be universally considered sophomoric and unduly hostile. (As it is, I'll just take it as somewhat jarring mea culpa from an otherwise good reviewer)
Also, boo to Steven Talko - third comment from bottom.
Just because you didn't like the movie, it doesn't give you the right to spoil it for everyone else. It does speak about you almost as much as your cluelessness about funding of independent foreign movies or realities between men and women.

Great review, great movie!

You don't have to give your props to Boreanaz so grugingly. No one is going to think any different of your masculinity just because you appreciate acting in someone who also happens to be THAT attractive.
He is good and has the awards prove it. I can't wait to see this movie.

The trailer is hilarious

I've watched the trailer for this film on the These Girls website and it looks really funny. I liked the great review for the film. You make me want to see the movie even more. I'm just trying to figure out how Stephen Talko spent "tax dollars" to see a movie. Is he from Canada? Do ya'll get money from the government up there to go to see the movies? That would be neat. I can't afford to go very often so if the government would spend tax dollars to pay for my movie tickets I'd be happy!!

Film Review 101/John Hazlett & Vivienne Laxdal cast the wonderfully sardonic Caroline Dhavernas in their adaptation of These Girls

Will you love it or will you hate it? Do you feel this way because of the subject matter or the execution? Po-tay-toe or po-tah-toe?
~
Ah, nothing like a Canadian funded flick to divide the masses and not an Atom Egoyan or David Cronengerg to be seen for miles around. Go figure. Admittedly, I ought to gut this movie on the basic idea that since we produced it that therefore it must follow that it sucks. Hey, you know it's true. Americans produce way more film crap than we do but at least most of that isn't funded by Telefilm-Canada, our tax dollars at work. Or waste, depending on your point of view. Anyways, here's "These Girls". Love it or leave it.
~
Sorry but I kinda dig the premise of the script and I like these actors. Caroline Dhavernas, that got a raw deal from the programming idiots over at FOX TV (God, how I miss "Wonderfalls"...) has bounced back into something right up her alley and David Boreanaz gets a chance to do something besides brood and be dark, so really my interest is already piqued. Besides, this movie can't be that bad--if it were can you just imagine the crap that's locked away in the archives for our own good? Brrrrrr...

Thank God for epiphanies

David Boreanaz has been in 3 great series, starring in two of them, and amply demonstrating his comedy skills. Still, better late than never - glad to see the reviewer joining the rest of us in this knowledge.
Thank you for this review. I am hoping that good word will lead to a theatrical release in this country as well - as it's doing well in Canada.
As to the first commentator, this is an independent Canadian production so none of your tax money went there. You can rest assured that Halliburton, Enron and Abramoff retain your full amount of tax money with no competition from this movie.

Don't waste your time

Dave Jaffer found this ridiculous movie funny, funny. What a joke!
This movie tells the story of three teenage girls who blackmail the village stud to have sex with them on a rotating basis while they babysit his daughter. There is something to offend everybody in this piece of trash.Men are depicted as brainless twits who are totally devoid of reason when it comes to sex .
The worst part of this movie is that it is dull.It does not entertain or instruct .

Intrigued

First of all, I want it to be known that I am a fan of 'Angel', but in no way do I worship the ground Boreanaz walks on. I tried to watch his new show on FOX, but it's not for me. That said, your review of the movie has me interested. Boreanaz's role sounds complicated and hilarious, two of my favorite things in a character! The 'blackmailed into sex' bit adds that touch of absurdity that makes me want to go out and see 'These Girls.' Great review... I hope the movie lives up to your words!

Revolting

I squirmed in my seat as I watched this third rate film and a waste of my tax dollars. Even the sound score was almost deafening and could not hide the fact that the plot stretched the imagination past the breaking point. Growing marijuana plants in a greenhouse on the front lawn and not being discovered by even the most casual of pedestrians was hard to believe. It would be impossible to avoid the pungent smell. I cannot understand why the three girls don't go after teenage boys who can't all be that immature. The arrangement with each girl having sex on separate evenings with Keith a married man of 32 with baby made my blood boil. Keith was lucky he just got a gash on his scalp and was able to hide the whole sordid affair from his trusting wife. Gloria as the most active of the so called babysitters even got pregnant. Lisa as the devout Christian made a mockery of her religion. And lastly Keira was ready to abandon university against her father's wishes but finally relents when she realizes there are many mature men including professors in academia that she can attract with her charms. The absolute worst message for our young females.

Convincing

Never thought I'd be tempted to see "a teen comedy, a sex comedy, a teen sex comedy, or any other permutations of those terms," as Jaffer puts it. But this is one of those rare reviews in which the enthusiasm of the author is contagious, so I must congratulate him for a job well done. It doesn't happen often that film critics can manage to overcome preconceived notions (and a genre's extremely bad record). Keep this man on the staff, Hour, he'll go far.

This movie is funny!

This movie is great. All the actors give a wonderful and funny performance. The girls who play these girls do a great job driving the character that David Boreanaz portrays crazy. David Boreanaz does a great job doing comedy. He was the perfect guy to play this role. Plus he is so hot!

Can't wait to see this movie!

It seems it pleases and angers all the right people. My kind of movie. Kudos to Boreanaz for not playing it safe. Now I know that not only is he a good actor, but it's not an acccident that he is offered all the interesting parts. He welcomes them and that makes it easy for his fans to follow him.

I was in the test screening at Dawson

I was in Cinema at Dawson last year and this film was test screened on my class. I did not mind it. It takes some choices you don't see much, as most of these types of movies have little in terms of character. This one has that character and it's not as funny as it could be but it brings something else out. The performances are pretty good too.

Good taste

Glad to here you changed your mind about David Boreanaz. His new show on Fox (Bones) is great too. I can't wait to see this movie. Do you think it might get a wider release? I hope so.
