Norbit
French version

(United States, 2007) With Eddie Murphy, Thandie Newton and Terry Crews. Directed by Brian Robbins (Hard Ball). Category : Comedy. Length : 1:42. Classification : 13 and over

Movie description :
Another Eddie Murphy comedy for kids. Norbit (Eddie) has been bullied by the monstrous Rasputia (Eddie) most of his life. They're married and things are getting worse. A little bit of hope sparks him as Thandie Newton comes back to town. Special effects have become so banal that we barely blink twice as Eddie plays both hero and antagonist, often within the same shot. Eddie's funny but the movie isn't.

Rasputia: Imagine Donkey From Shrek In A Dress Plus 350 Pounds..............

Norbit is supposed to be a film people can relate to. If you remember Kit Ramsey in Bowfinger, Murphy is back as Norbit, weak, lame and generally non-threatening (but people like him.)

~The narration is Norbit's perspective as life begins as a baby, then to be dropped off at a Chinese restaurant/orphanage.

~He meets his first true love while there, Kate Thomas, (played as adult Kate by Thandie Newton). Kate gets adopted and Norbit sheds a few tears when she leaves.

~One day he is picked on in the sandbox and a large girl comes over to stick up for him. This is the beginning of a relationship with Rasputia (also played by Murphy), who he marries and regrets every moment. She has 3 big, bad brothers who keep him in line all the time.

~I was amazed how special effects (fat suits) are getting so damn-real looking. Cellulite on Rasputia's legs, veins running along the sides of her thighs and extra-super-huge nipples popping out from every tight blouse her character puts on. If she was real, she'd be the talk of the 'hood in some towns.

~I suppose there may be some truth to relationships where larger women abuse their smaller and less empowered spouses, but Rasputia is ridiculous.

~Norbit lives under her control, until he catches her in bed with her aerobics instructor Buster (played by Marlon Wayans). Norbit's not happy and wishes that Kate comes back into his life somehow. She comes back into town but is already engaged to Deion Hughes (Cuba Gooding Jr). Gooding is lost in this movie and adds nothing here.

~ I suppose you'll like this movie if you can tolerate Eddie Murphy for an 1hr and a 1/2. He's got some funny moments playing 3 different characters but sadly, most of the scenes are in the trailers playing all over the place to promote this film.

~If you close your eyes, Murphy as Rasputia is "Donkey in a dress" plus a whole bunch of weight and dimpled cheeks; you might think you've stumbled onto Shrek 3 by accident.

Wait for the DVD

Why does Eddie Murphy still makes movie is beyond me, he use to be so good in the 80's now is acting his very lame I find, and making really immature jokes to make people laugh, The only thing I loved about this movie was the way they were able to make him Asian and as a big fat girl. You might find it mildly funny but the ending (wedding gone wrong) was stretching too much, pointless, and very stupid.

Pretty Bad

This movie was pretty bad. I actually wanted to walk out. During the whole movie i was just trying to figure out how the pretty girl was interested in Norbit who was so weird, awkward and retarded. It didn't make any sense to me. They ended up married at the end. This movie was awful, a waste of my time even though i saw it at the premiere for free.

Definitely Predicable.

Norbit again has Eddie Murphy donning fat suits and wigs. He plays the part of a skinny nerdy accountant raised in an orphanage who loses the love of his life. He then hooks up with an overbearing and overweight woman (Rasputia, played by Eddie Murphy). It doesn't require a college degree to figure out how this is going to play out. There are all the usual predicable laughs but Eddie Murphy has definitely done better. Wait for the DVD.

Disappointing

As an Eddie Murphy fan I have to say that this movie left me feeling VERY disappointed. The funny bits were all in the commercial, and the rest left me wondering what ever happened to the Eddie Murphy of old. To me, this was a disappointing attempt at re-creating his Nutty Professor success. Its too bad because with Dreamgirls, Eddie had finally shown himself to have real acting potential. This movie was not only a step backwards, but in my mind it catapulted him to the bottom of Hollywood's 'next big surprise' list. Tsk tsk Eddie....you coulda been somebody....

Eddie Murphy's Death Wish!

How can actors like Eddie Murphy come up with stellar performances like in Dreamgirlz then participate in atrocities like Pluto Nash and this one Norbit. Murphy seems to forget the basic premise of a good movie: a good story. Makeup and special effects are catchy like for the first 15 seconds then you look for the laughs and this case it's along search unless you think fat people going down water slides are hilarious comic bits.

What You'd Expect...

It's a complete turnaround from the overweight but endearing Sherman Klump character Murphy played in "The Nutty Professor." I would have to say that the picture's humour is both a hit and miss. There were too many long unfunny passages and characters that really didn't change much. Yes, there were quite a few out loud laughing bursts from the audience. Unfortunately they did not come from my direction. It's a silly movie that kind of drags and seems too long at an hour and 40 minutes.

Don't Go Unless its Free and even Then

I had read reviews for it saying that it was horrible and especially after Dream Girls, it was disappointing to see Eddie Murphy in this movie. I had free tickets for the previews and lets just say I was unimpressed. I have to say the makeup used to transform Eddie Murphy was really good though and about the only good thing in the movie.

Funny Movie

I went last Friday to watch norbit and let me tell you that Eddie Murphy was amazingly funny like always. This movie is about him being left at the Chinese door step and then became one of the family and as he grew he had a crush and then she moved away and as he grew older he found this big ass girl which he ended up marring her till one day his old childhood love came into his life and he left his wife and remarried his one true love!...This is a great movie to go see with friends and family.

A Barrel of Laughs

I found Norbit to be a very funny and entertaining film. The oddball characters all have unusual names so you know who they are like Rasputia for instance. Others such as the goddess like Kate have pleasing names. I had to feel sorry for the fat lady who always got her way often through intimidation. She like other environmentally conscious citizens favoured small cars but once she entered the driver's seat just breathing caused her to activate the horn. When she later threw herself into bed with Norbit underneath, the bed came crashing down. Furniture is not built very well these days especially with cheap press wood. At the Aqua park she could care less about the 300 pound limit and careened down the slide crashing though a wooden structure before landing in a wading pool that was left bone dry. Earlier she had trouble squeezing through the turnstile which she almost knocked over. She was not afraid to go to fitness class and ask for private lessons giving her a chance to have an affair with the very fit instructor. The wedding ceremony near the end was one huge spectacle with great song and dance routines. This film shows how tough life can be for those with heavy body builds. A light-hearted movie not to be taken seriously.

It Could Have Been

much worse and much better

From the trailer i was concerned that it would just put the emphasis en the size of the woman, and that it would just have lots of sad stereotypical jokes about her size. Thankfully, most jokes were not about her size, the character of Rasputia was unpleasant because of her personality, and you would quickly forget about her size, which makes me wonder why they had to portray her so big, on the other hand she is showing lots of confidence for a big lady, so that could always be good...Despite the good intentions i disconnected after the fist 30 minutes, it became very predictable, and all the characters were way too superficial, Cuba Gooding jr could have added some weight to this movie, but he had barely any lines. I hope eddie murphy will go back to do good movies, instead of banking on his reputation of funny man.

It Was OK, Could of Been Better

It seems Eddie Murphy is going back what he does best, playing several characters at the same time in a movie. To this point, it does get a little tiring, we know he can do it by now. Don't get me wrong, Norbit does have some really funny and cute moments. Also the film has a great supporting cast to help keep it going, especially from Eddie Griffin who plays the pimp who has some of the best lines. Eddie Murphy was really good as Norbit and it could of worked a little better if he just played him and let other actors play the rest of the characters...

Not So Funny

Boy, Eddie Murphy has to stop making movies like this. Okay, so fat chicks are not the most attractive (no offense), but must we really make fun of them? Did someone suddenly decided it would be funny to make the Nutty Professor a woman? What the devil is this crap!? So Eddie Murphy decided to show up for DreamGirls and delivered a marvelous performance, then commit carrer suicide by doing this flick. Eddie, I really don't know what you're thinking, but man, you have got to stop this madness.

Norbit,Norbit.

A sweet and somewhat vulgar movie that would have been right at home in the 90's. Mind you the movie provides laughs and chuckles but when it ends you feel like you have watched it a few times before. The type of comedy that is portrayed in the movie is fun and can be enjoyed by a very wide range of people but the after taste of deja-vu is too strong. My verdict: good to rent, not to be seen in theaters.

Very Funny Movie!

At first, before watching the film i thought it would just be another cheap comedy from fellow comedian Eddie Murphy. I knew he would play multiple characters and i thought of how horrible it could be. Just thing of the characters in the nutty professor.I found them to be very annoying and boring. There was nothing special about them. But people, do not worry, norbit turned out to be an excellent movie and delivers all the goods that a true comedy should bring. The characters Murphy plays are hilarious! The fat lady(rasputia by her name),norbit as well as Mr. Wang are very fun to watch. Two thumbs way up for Murphy's performance!

Norbit-

You will enjoy Norbit if you are an Eddie Murphy fan. This movie is along the same lines as Fat Albert. Hence, don't expect to sit through a thought provoking and serious movie. This movie is very predictable and filled with slapstick humor. Nevertheless, Eddie Murphy is still very talented as he sails through this comedy playing three roles simultaneously. He is a great comic actor and no one can take this away from him. Needless to say, our orphan hero overcomes evil and finds romance at the end. This is a fun movie if you are in need of a good laugh and simply want to relax.

Nutty Professor It Ain't...

On paper, this movie had a lot of potential. We have Eddie Murphy once again donning fat suit to play multiple characters in a single movie. While he does have the ability to do this impressively (especially as the Chinese orphanage/restaurant owner Mr. Wong), it just seems to pale in comparison when you look at what he was able to do with his Nutty Professor characters.

The supporting cast had some very good names: Terry Crews, Eddie Griffin, and Cuba Gooding Jr (who for some reason just hasn't been able to get any meaningful roles since Jerry McGuire - he should fire his agent!). The make-up artists' work was just amazing. That fat suit was so realistic and Eddie Murphy was almost unrecognizable as Mr. Wong. Unfortunately, the surprisingly poor story line (written by Eddie and Charlie Murphy, two good comedy writers in their own right) just couldn't make this movie work. What a shame...

Thar She Blows!

Anyone who goes to see this movie expecting to have their world changed forever deserves to be disappointed! Of course I am crazy about Eddie so I tend to forgive him for bad script choices etc, but my friend and I really liked this movie. It kept you laughing...if for no other reason than it will be something he himself will make fun of 10 years down the road. There were a couple of great lines in this movie, and yes some very cheesy ones too--but that is Eddie. Can you see Eddie in some snotty movie about the King of France...no, you can't! What he delivers in this movie is the same as in any one of his other movies, laughs that you don't have to think about. Laughs based on our most primal instincts, sex, love and food...and I wouldn't want it any other way!

Norbit - Laugh At It, Not With It

I went to see the pre-show..and lets just say...you can sort of laugh at the movie but don't expect to laugh with it. The jokes are all stale - come with all stereotypical overweight African American cliches that are out there..however what I did find fascinating was the makeup. The body suit Eddy wears is unbelievably believable? if that's the right way to put it..so, besides that, and an amazingly predictable storyline full of bad puns and horrible cliches, Norbit doesn't have much to offer. Don't waste your money..

No Thanks

So, I went to see this movie last night, and It wasn't all that great. It was kind of like the same old love story business. HOW YOU DOING?! Absolutely annoying!!!!!. Every five seconds, could they not find anything else for her/him to say? It was long in some parts, few funny parts and just blah in others. The one thing that i thought was crazy, was that Mr.Wong is actually Eddie Murphy (I watched credits)! I knew he didn't really look asia, but Eddie Murphy? The wonders of Make-UP..

Geeze... People Too Lazy to Rate this Movie with Stars?

Not everyone has time to read all the reviews here, so it would be nice if people could just give a star or stars. By not seeing any here, to me it looks like everyone loathed this movie so much that it didn't even warrant stars. Well, I saw the free preview last night and I'd have to say...it was alright. I mean Eddie is best at comedy. I've seen some serious stuff he's done and it's okay. I thought the story was original enough. Him being a child orphan and then getting that huge mean girlfriend that became his wife. Nice to see movies where people can identify with things. I thought Cuba Gooding, Jr. was good too and like seeing him in this film. I'm not saying I would spend $10 at the theatre for this film, but yet again I don't think I would spend that much for ANY comedy in the theatres. $10 is worth a Spiderman movie or something big like that...but that's another story.

The Laugh is Limited...

Last night, I saw the film Norbit with Eddie Murphy, it was funny. Eddie's returning to the big screen as an actor/writer/producer. Again, there is some enormous personnages in his film, something like The Klumps. Although it's not as funny as the Klumps, you'll find some good moment during that film. I've seen the story before; someone married to the wrong woman finally find the love of his life. The only thing that I could complained about is the fact that Eddie doesn't speak loud enough (he had an apparel in his mouth to make his bottom lips bigger) - I had a hard time listening to what he was saying. You wont have stomach cramps because of laughing too much - the laugh is limited. In general, it is a good movie.

Norbit

Although there were some funny moments, I found parts of the movie to be long. It was a wimpy story line. Didn't seem to connect very well. Eddie Murphy was very wimpy and boring as Norbit - no life, no expression, nothing. As 'Big Moma' however, it was quite funny, a little irritating at times. Left the theater with a sore butt. Would not pay to see again.

Norbit

I went to see this movie last night with friends and yet while there were a few funny parts in it, i have to say I was not impressed. I could not understand when Norbit's wife spoke, she screeched to much. Norbit was a wimp and sometimes the movie got boring, I find it was too long, and some things were just to much. Even though Eddie played his parts well this movie is a bust in my opinion. Would not go and see it again. once is enough.

What else is new?

Eddie Murphy's "Norbit" looks a lot like a re-tread of a an old comedy staple-- some well-meaning schlub marries a monster, only to dump her for the Goddess of his dreams.

"The Heartbreak Kid" (1972), a classic Neil Simon comedy, follows an identical path, as nebbish Charles Grodin desperately seeks Cybill Shepard. In the same vein, little Dudley Moore goes off the deep end for Bo Derek in "10" (1979). Are you getting an idea of how old this storyline is?

In both these cases, as with "Norbit", the quest for perfection is justified, given the horrific hell of living with an ordinary, unglamourous woman-- even one who is devoted, passionate, and accomodating. What are women to make of this message?

Here's a better idea that's just ripe for a remake: "Trop Belle Pour Toi" (1989), in which Gerard Depardieu dumps his glamourous wife for his sympathetic (but perfectly plain) housekeeper. I won't hold my breath.

Eddie Meet Oscar...Or Not

Why is it that someone who was big in the 80s seem slowly to lose his way, a few roles here and there (and not very good ones), voice work(which was fine), then the ultimate gig...*Dreamgirls*with an amazing cast. So why is it that someone who outshine and outperformed, getting awards for his performance (Golden globe, SAG and even a nod towards an Oscar) fall back into a rut...did he have the choice, most likely yes, but i guess its the instincts that made him return to this style of comedy.... or was it that the new fans that he gained were to sophisticated for him! Eddie can act, so please for future reference --- no more of acting along yourself (there might be a reason why he ends up playing 4 different parts in these type of movies.

Norbit - The Early Review

Norbit is the latest from Eddie Murphy which seems to reunite him with prosthetics, changing and morphing him into some grandiose characters that we've somewhat seen before. The trailers look pretty funny but it's all about the suit. That and the fact that having a 300-pound woman in a bikini top is done for cheap laughs. I could have easily seen Martin Lawrence going for cheap hilarity. Anyway, he's always funny, depending on the script. My sole concern for Eddie is that firstly people may have gotten tired of the Klumpish characters, since they kinda seem to come from the same family. And secondly, since he's appeared in Dreamgirls and has been getting all this praise, perhaps a movie like Norbit undervalue his credibility, on the comedy or dramatic front. Time will tell.

Too much Eddie...?

In many of the articles I read about Dreamgirls, it was mentioned how Jamie Foxx is so self-promoting and thinks so highly of himself. Perhaps Eddie spent too much time with Jamie. Why would anyone want to play a gajillion roles in the same movie? Love of sitting in a make-up chair every day for hours on end? He is a great actor, true, but that doesn't mean he has to play every character in the movie!!! Give other people a chance, lol.

Why? What? Nnnnoooooooooo.........

I have no idea what thoughts are running though Eddie Murphy's brain, but someone should sit the man down and try and talk some sense into him. I had forgotten he had any talent until I saw 'Dreamgirls'. The man can act, he really can but you'd never know it with all the crap he produces. I can't help but think that he's playing most of the roles because he can't get anyone to agree to be in the movie with him. He's better than this. Someone please give the man some real material to work with.

The Klumps... I mean Norbit...

Here's the trailer Staring Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy and Eddie Murphy. What the hell we all know you got Scary Spice Mel B. on your ass wanting her child support when that baby pops out but really you can do a comedy and have other actors in the movie. The amount of time and money that he probabally spent in make-up and learing all the extra lines simply to make another only starring Eddie murphy movie is just so 1999. Hopefully when I see this I wont fall asleep.

i just saw dreamgirls last night and was completely impressed ~ no, blown away ~ by eddie murphy's performance in it... unfortunately and sadly there was also a preview for norbit in it...(coincidence or career suicide??) i concur ten fold that this is possible the worst follow up movie that he could have thought of doing... what's the fascination with one actor playing all the lead characters in the same movie?? it's not like it's never been done before... i only hope that shrek lll will redeem him somewhat...

Coming Soon: Norbit

Eddie Murphy just did one of his best performances of his career in Dreamgirls. He won a golden globe award for his performance and might get an Oscar nod and this is how he chooses to follow up this performance. He chooses a comedy that looks like a prequel to the nutty professor franchise. I'm very disappointed by this because Eddie Murphy is such a good actor and comedian when i want to be but I'm getting tired of seeing him in movie like this one. This should be a flop and it might be an early contender for next year's Razzie's.

Oh, Eddie...what in sweet tarnation were you thinking? Dude, I've seen you through some pretty rough and sucky movies and lord knows I've cut you some slack on some of your less glorious moments (getting stopped in 1997 for picking up a transsexual prostitute? Really, what the hell was the thinking there?!) but now that you've finally within reach of Oscar validation for doing Dreamgirls you come out with crap like Norbit? Ugh. You left SNL years ago to do your own thing and now you're doing movies that are worse than the lamest SNL skit? Seriously dude, what the hell?!

Norbit

I have to admit that I did not enjoy the movie for the most part except the ending (the way that others stood up for Norbit). "Nutty Professor" was well done with all the special effects as well as Nutty Professors II, however, Eddie Murphy has taken these special effects to a boring extreme. Totally, he was not good in this one.

Norbit

Norbit is a good family comedy. Eddie Murphy did the role really good as Resputia. Resputia is a fat lady that Eddie Murphy ( who played her) was forced to marry. She is so fat that when she gets in her car she can honk the horn with her breasts. It is such a great movie, I was laughing through out the whole movie. Eddie Murphy can do a really good job of portraying multiple people in one movie. In the movie Eddie Murphy plays a child who was dumped off at a Chinese orphanage where he meets the love of his life. But hen Kate gets adopted and Norbit is stuck by himself. He then meets Resputia and she tells him she is going to marry him. He goes on to marry her. Years later he meets Kate again and he learns that she is engaged to be married. Then Resputia brothers and Kate's Fiancée go on to work working together to try to get a hold of the orphanage to turn into a strip club : a funny and exciting movie, 3 stars!

Funny Movies!

you can't go wrong when you pick to see a funny movie. Eddie Murphy is a great actor and all his movies will be sell outs. He is just good and what he does and this movie has a lot of laughs and mostly because the jokes always hit close to home. If you have any sense of humor you can not sit through this movie without laughing a few times at least. Good movie to take your girlfriend on Valentines day to see this movie and have a good laugh and enjoy the evening!

I don't understand why he would agree to being in this comedy when it looks so beneath him. This looks worse than the Klumps, I didn't find that funny so how am i supposed to find this one? Will only watch it if its free or there's nothing else to watch.
