Big One (The)

(United States, 1997) Directed by Michael Moore (Roger & Me). Category : Documentary. Length : 1:30. Classification : General

Movie description :
Part stand-up comedy, part guerilla agit prop, Moore's first since Roger and Me takes another well-aimed stab at corporate america. There's way to much material jammed into this video record of the director's 48-city whirlwind book tour and it can get pretty self-indulgent. But when Moore's on -he's on. This time he even manages to talk to one of the illusive CEOs he's been chasing after.

Just about what you'd expect...

Lefties rejoice!! Fat boy skewers big business, politicians and rich people. Right wingers grumble and fold your arms. Everyone else, enjoy the entertainment.

I love Michael Moore's films. Not because I agree with everything he says, but because he's a great film maker. He's many things, but boring isn't one of them.

Long before Michael Moore decided that he hated the Republicans, Mike was getting his digs in on Bubba Clinton. At the beginning of the movie he sends out 4 cheques from "groups" (that he created) for $100 to each political party. Groups like "Pedophiles for Lowering the age of Consent" etc. etc. just to see if they'd take the money. Ya ya... I know there are only 2 political parties, but you're forgetting guys like Ross Perot and Pat Buchanan. See? I loved this part. I hate all politicians equally and he went after all of them.

I also really enjoyed where HE was briefly put on the spot when asked why he doesn't sell his books ONLY at independent bookstores instead of the huge chains that hire people with no benefits and aren't unionized.

His response?

"He'd thought about it until his book became a best seller on the New York Times list."

Wow, what refreshing honesty. What refreshing hypocrisy. Too bad they didn't grill him a little longer about it. Bonus points to him for actually including the footage even if it was brief.

The movie is hilarious and we know that it's edited to be unfair. Get over it! At the very least it makes you think. You can't help but come out of the movie discussing the questions he raises.

Whether you're a patchouli wearing dirty hippie, or a gun toting pick up truck driving country music fan, you owe it to yourself to see his movies because he almost single handedly put the documentary format into the movie theatres today. I don't think there would be a "Super Size Me" or "The Take" or "Bus 174" without him. He's proved that documentaries can be entertaining regardless of which wing you prefer.

Typical Michael Moore

This documentary was made about 10yrs before his 911 movie.... and apart from a babyfaced, skinnier (maybe 250lbs vs today's 350) Michael Moore, what you see here is pretty similar to all his other documetaries.

This follows Michael Moore on a cross country book tour. Only, instead of just doing the big cities, Moore goes to the little places... He used this tour as a chance to (surprise surprise) target corporations, and their massive layoffs.

Some of the scenes are quite hilarious. During one, her offers "Payday" chocolate bars a huge lottery style check for eighty cents to pay their Mexican worker for his 1st day of labour.

If you are going to watch a Michael Moore propaganda piece, you know what you are going to get. That being said, I think he honestly does believe in his cause. In this film, he attacks Barnes and Nobles, a risky move since they sell his books...

I don't always agree with Moore, but he always makes me think. This is definetly worth the $4.75 rental price. Check it out!
