League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (The)

(United States, Germany, 2003) With Sean Connery, Peta Wilson and Naseeruddin Shah. Directed by Stephen Norrington (Blade). Category : Action. Length : 1:50. Classification : General

Movie description :
The trailers for this comic-to-screen adaptation make it look clunky and ridiculous. Actually, director Norrington ("Blade") has given a fresh cast to Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's yarn, going for the pulpy feel of an old-school movie serial. The League is question is made up of the cast-off pop heroes of another generation - Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde. Even Dorian Grey has a part to play. There's wit in all this, even if senseless explosions drown out the charm by the end.

When good graphic novels go bad...very very bad....

Director Stephen Norrington and writer James Robinson have taken alan Moore's fantastical graphic novel and reduced it to a one note simplistic tale of Hollywoodian butchery. A shame.

It is film that is so very bad that it is hard to begin to start as to where it went off the rails.

To begin the casting of the film is atrocious. The fact that such lightweights like Shane West, Peta Wilson or Stuart Townsend are expected to recreate such timeless characters like Mina Harker or Dorian Gray is ludicrious. They simply to not have the acting chops to lend any depth to the roles.

The script is truly terrible which is surprising given that the film is of the unmissable variety. The fact that a concept that has a motley crew of such legendary characters coming together is ruining takes a truly unexceptionally rotten script. Meanwhile, director Stephen Norrington, while adept at handling special effects has all the subtlety of a bull in a china shop.

It is a shame that the film is so very bad as the graphic novels were so very interesting and had the potential for making a good series of films. Too bad the film is so boring...even the usually reliable Sean Connery delivers his most somnambulistic performance to date.

A terrible film.

Now this is good...

Excellent special effects...characters come to life on film that are rarely ever dramatized. apparently this league existed a 100 years ago in comic books...it was before the justice league of DC Comics. I have never seen a film of this before. i thought the story was good. COuld have been stronger, but there is room for a sequel if the another plot was that good. This reminded me of the Atmosfear game for some reason. a bunch of dark characters coming together to fight a real threat...a real evil. WHo knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Watch this movie and find out. The best scenes are the fight scenes at the end in the castle and the destroying part of the Venice city and the submarine escape.

Sequel?

This movie was great. It's based off of the comic of the same name about a league of well extraordinary gentlemen. Sean Connery prooves he still has a bit of bond left in him as he goes into action followed by the rest of his team. Each character puts something more interesting in the movie. A sequel to this most likely will never happen but if it did it would be much welcomed, because it seems this movie is far underrated.

An entertaining movie

I saw the LXG movie not at the theater but at home and I found it entertaining.

Many people have forgotten the meaning of a movie: it's just a movie, it's supposed to entertain.

This being said, the movie is entertaining keeping in mind that these are fictional characters and that Tom Sawyer was never a government agent of the United States.

Although I didn't like the actor that played Sawyer the character was a good supplement to the story. I would have been good to put Sherlock Holmes, Jim West or any other fictional character.

In all I found the movie good, it had a good story and it was very entertaining to the point of me wanting to buy the DVD edition of it.

Strange but good

Great movie if you like action / thrillers, with good special effects and creativity. The weird combination of characters flows better than expected and the overall result is quite good and entertaining. I did'nt expect it to be so good but the characters were real inventive and the plot was awesome. Sean Connery is great, of course. I enjoyed it very much.

Bad movie

I recently rented this movie, and I thought it might be fun to watch since I have enjoyed most of the classics from which the literary characters were taken. I was particularly interested in seeing the portrayal of Dorian Gray, since Oscar Wilde's novel is one of my favourite ever. I was wrong, though, and I did not think this movie was worth the rental fee. The characters are caricatures of their book forms, and the plot was completely unbelievable. I did not feel like any thought was put into this movie at all, when it could have been really interesting, especially for us literature nerds. This movie was very shallow and not worth the time.
