That "other" music scene

Ideal Lovers: Just waiting to play

Ideal Lovers find perfect place 'twixt hipsters and hip-waders

I'm sitting in the cramped comfort of the Divan Orange's basement with the boys from Ideal Lovers as they prepare to back up band member Mike O'Brien's launch of his solo album. In person, Zac DeCamp, David Payant, Joe Grass, Josh Toal and O'Brien (Mike Evin is missing in the wilds of Toronto) seem somewhat like their music: straightforward, confident and swigging on a bottle of rum. We're in the middle of my attempt to start some shit in the local folk-country-rock scene.

"The Plants And Animals guys are great," says DeCamp, before Grass adds, "But Timber? Big assholes!"

The joke works because this is one musical community that thrives on the fact that everyone collaborates with each other in the studio, on stage and at the bar. On top of the aforementioned cast, the band, who like P&A are a little more rock than country, cite musicians like Li'l Andy & KC, Angela Desveaux, Dara Weiss, the Ships at Night roster, plus Kees Dekker and Gilles Castilloux of the Treatment Room as being part of this granola-flecked clusterfuck.

Ideal Lovers were originally started by DeCamp - a Yankee who came here eight years ago for school and never left - and Payant, who surrounded themselves with a likeminded cast of multi-instrumentalists who've come to play a more central role in the group. I mention that it seems like this specific musical neighbourhood, made up of slightly unhip musicians
who concentrate more on their craft than their MySpace pages, may be the one scene in Montreal that should, but may not, blow up. After some good-natured, but half-hearted, protestations to the contrary, Payant adds:

"There's no big master plan. We're not going to wait around for a record deal that may never come - we just want to play."

Amazing Alt-Country!

Wow - yet another alt-country (super)group. In Montreal's indie-scene, the alt-country community is so incredibly close-knit and mutually supportive that to know one group is to be exposed to just 'bout the whole breadth and depth of indie-country's roots here. If anything is going to break big-time, you'd have to think it'd be our burgeoning alt-country scene 'cause in terms of sheer unbridled talent, creative cross-pollination, and unrivalled picking and playing - Montreal bands/troubadours have few peers!
