"The Plants And Animals guys are great," says DeCamp, before Grass adds, "But Timber? Big assholes!"
The joke works because this is one musical community that thrives on the fact that everyone collaborates with each other in the studio, on stage and at the bar. On top of the aforementioned cast, the band, who like P&A are a little more rock than country, cite musicians like Li'l Andy & KC, Angela Desveaux, Dara Weiss, the Ships at Night roster, plus Kees Dekker and Gilles Castilloux of the Treatment Room as being part of this granola-flecked clusterfuck.
Ideal Lovers were originally started by DeCamp - a Yankee who came here eight years ago for school and never left - and Payant, who surrounded themselves with a likeminded cast of multi-instrumentalists who've come to play a more central role in the group. I mention that it seems like this specific musical neighbourhood, made up of slightly unhip musicians
"There's no big master plan. We're not going to wait around for a record deal that may never come - we just want to play."
