Anti-furs industry

Not all's lost for Boeckner and Perry

Handsome Furs find themselves dogged by animal rights activists

I sat down with Handsome Furs, Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry, at the same coffee shop where the drum machine that contained all their music was stolen several weeks ago. While it's becoming clear they won't be getting it back, they've reluctantly embraced the loss.

"When it happened, some friends saw the silver lining - that we could now change the stuff we hated," says Perry, while Boeckner adds, "It helped the live show because having different versions of the songs stops you from just recreating the album every night."

The two are also involved in a summer project called getting married, one that seems to be getting as much attention as their Sub Pop debut, Plague Park, to Perry's amazement.

"Someone posted on our MySpace page when and where we're getting married, so we're going to start telling people we're getting married on a volcano in Iceland." They recount being asked in a recent interview if playing music together is ruining their relationship, which we all decide could be the angle the next time around. Boeckner: "The next tour we'll do the Fleetwood Mac thing and play shows with a Plexiglas screen between us."

The telephone game that is the Internet has plenty more to say about them. While the rumour that Boeckner spent his entire Wolf Parade advance on Perry's wedding ring is pretty good, this next one they share with me takes the cake:

"Because we're
the 'Handsome Furs' - and we've got a song called Dumb Animals - we got a ton of attention from PETA and ALF. We even got some death threats... Some of them said we're a front for the fur industry, who apparently took the time to synthesize an indie rock band, infiltrate MySpace and get them signed to a label."

The Fur Will Fly..............

It's maybe not surprising that PETA and Animal Protection Groups extend their Google Searches to find anything that even could come into their radar. But, alas, Handsome Furs are innocent, unassuming actually and not hurting any animals in the process of creating their magic.

If you want a disturbing video, go to the main PETA site and watch ~if you can~ the fur being skinned from wolves still aline after they were bred in captivity. You will not have watched something as disturbing or as telling about the fur coat industry. It is shocking and made me so angry at the men in the video for the damage they caused. As for the Handsome Furs, hope the wedding bells are nice and loud, so that anyone far from Iceland can still hear your blissful sentiments you exchange in your vows.

People Eating Tasty Animals

so what if they REALLY ARE a front for the fur industry? is that really so bad? remember, we all used to drag women around by their hair and carry around clubs not so long ago, we didn't always rely on the oil industry for our synthetics, right? and the fact that men did the majority of the resource harvesting, the killing of harmless defenseless animals, that only made the men of that time more manly, the stonger the better in order to protect the OTHER defenseless animals, the women and their children, right? and i'm sure that when push comes to shove the man in the relationship/Handsome Furs, whomever it proves to be will do just the same: to kill! it's what separates us, man from beast, the conscious decision to take a life either for profit or for subsistence.

Furs Fury!

Well, their debut CD got a very favourable blurb in this month's issue of Rolling Stone (it also features a lengthy article devoted to The Arcade Fire). As for this whole PETA/ALF nonsense - people get a life, it' a name - they're a band, not some insidious fur industry marketing tool!!!
