Grizzly Bear: Pretty but not precious

New York's Grizzly Bear grappling with significant lift in popularity
It's Sunday at noon and Daniel Rossen is finishing up breakfast with his girlfriend. The singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist is low key - it's an ordinary day, he's home, taking his bike around Brooklyn - but you can tell things are not quite normal."Yeah, it's definitely different this time around," he confesses modestly. "There's a lot more going on."
The new album, Veckatimest, has been out barely a week and already it's clear: Grizzly Bear are going to push through to the upper echelons of indie rock with that accessible, impeccable psych-folk pop of theirs.
"We put a lot of time and craftsmanship on this record. We took as long as we possibly needed to make it exactly as it had to be," he says. "We set pretty high standards for ourselves and made a record that we would enjoy listening to."
Dedication, they have. And the means to honour it? That too (i.e., "We have a way of recording that allows us to do everything we want for basically no money. Our bassist has a mobile recording set-up that we can set up anywhere, so if someone gives us a living room or something, any time of day, we can work"). And yes, there is the fact that Grizzly Bear increasingly know how to write clean, stunning songs (Beach Boys overtly, Nick Drake implicitly), but the real standout feature is the consideration that this band give to their music.
"Most often people remark about
the harmonies, and the care put into the song," he says. "Of course, when something is too nurtured then it becomes precious, so that's the flipside of it. But we just try to ignore that."Grizzly Bear

Nice. Did you see all the funny stuff they did when they took over our site? http://drownedinsound.com/lists/grizzlybear
Daniel's mum did a guide to indie-rock, there was their recipe for Gumbo and all sorts.
