Nada Surf - Barsuk Records

Let Go
Jamie O'Meara

Clearheaded rock and adult pop for aging punks and grown-up indie kids. Doesn't sound like much fun, does it? Well, "fun" per se isn't the reason you'd throw on New York's Nada Surf. Maybe you just knocked off a 12-hour shift and you'd like something else to carry the mental load for a while. Maybe it's time to do a little emotional inventory and you need something to kick open the door to your psychological stock room. Or maybe you just like low-key acoustic guitars, starry harmonies, pinpoint vocalizing, writing that speaks to you like a friend and the occasional up-tempo rocker to jump-start your heart. Let Go, their third, is smooth but sapless, pro but unpredictable. (Jamie O'Meara)

Let Go

I've been a fan of Nada Surf since their first release, 'High/Low' in 1996. Let Go is their third release. It has a lot of the same elements that the first two cd's has, but this one has a more accessible sound I thought. Matthew Caws is a really good song writer, he has the ability to write solid pop/rock songs. Nice harmony on the vocals and intersting arrangements that give this band the indie edge. Stand out tracks for me are the opener, 'Blizzard of 77', 'Happy Kid', 'Inside of Love', 'Killians Red'...OK let's just say all of them now that I think of it. Solid effort by this trio and a fun live band.
