Mudmen - Sextant/EMI

Overrated
Mitch Joel

Two bag pipes and lots of rock'n'roll. Sure, Mudmen caught on a lot bigger in the rest of Canada with their 2001 self-titled debut, but now they bite back (hard) on their follow-up, Overrated. It's easy to get overcome by the six-foot-plus bagpiping duo of the Campbell brothers, but Mudmen also have a killer frontman in Zoy Nicoles. He sings like a fiend and throws a punch with a pinch of punk, a hint of alternative and a taste for the heavier stuff. At a time and place when everything seems so easy to classify, Mudmen are really doing lots of interesting stuff that would sit as well on radio as it would alongside Blink 182 or rocking a Hell's Angels compound. Mudmen - Overrated

This was one band I had heard so much about, that I was actually giddy to hear them. I'm a big fan of celtic-based rock, and love the Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly. Unfortunately, I was looking for something to compare to those bands, and I certainly didn't find it with the Mudmen.

Don't get me wrong, these guys play good music, but it just seems so restricted. Almost like they wanted to make the instruments blend so well, that they edited the grit out. I think under the right producer, these guys could do wonders, but they didn't in this case. I heard their live show is a one of a kind, so i'll catch it, in hopes of renewing my faith.
