Fatboy Slim - (Virgin/EMI)

Palookaville
Jamie O'Meara

Something to remember: Before there was Fatboy Slim the DJ, there was Norman Cook the bassist for breezy politi-pop '80s band The Housemartins. Never has it been more evident that these two are one and the same than on this fourth Fatboy album release, Palookaville. Live instrumentation (lots of guitars!) and vocals (we're talking actual verses and choruses) mark out the identified song structures, supplanting the heavy sampling and linear, layered repetition of yesteryear. Big dance beats still hold the floor, but the picture Cook is painting is unmistakably pop, which, in the right light, shines like a jumped-up, early Primal Scream, and in dimmer moments glows dully like a Smashmouth.

Fatboy Slim - Palookaville

Wow, aren't you a few years too late Fatboy Slim? Apparently, he's run out of money, and decided that releasing a half-baked album, was the best cure to his problem. Why do I say that? Cause this album has no soul, and feels like it had no thought put into it.

This is serious 'BUYER BEWARE' stuff. There's few moments that actually stand out, although anyone who actually payed attention in 1998, will notice a big difference in the song structure. Is that a good or bad thing? meh...who cares? He obviously didn't when he made this.

This album is as forgettable as...well, I forget.

Dance on - whatever your body shape!

Ahh, Fatboy!! I love Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook, whose creativity and great tunes have uplifted dark winter days as well as heated up already hot summer nights! What with this review being in the same issue as a Lalla Land article talking about new efforts to 'modernise' Montreal's club scene, I'd be hoping that we may be seeing Fatboy live at some point in the North American city of lights....

Fatboy Slim is one of the big UK DJs partly because he's homegrown but also because he fought for and created many excellent club nights such as Big Boutique and, of course, the huge Brighton beach party fests. This kind of celebration would be SO SO cool in Montreal, and we surely have a lot of our own DJs who can become the rising stars they deserve to be.

Love his Music

I have always been a huge fan of Fatboy Slim. His music has inspired me to put it my films that I do. I also love to dance to his music while I'm in my room because it's so upbeat and different from what other artists are doing. It has been a long time since we have heard music from Fatboy Slim and I know that this record will be very interesting to listen to. Fatboy is one of the best DJ's in the world. This record will be really awesome to put on at parties.

Fatboy Slim: Palookaville

It's been a while since Fatboy Slim was 'fucking in Heaven',if you know what I mean, and the arrival of "Palookaville" feel like he's back on the old horse. Fact is, the last that he release, well, BLOOOWED, and Norman Cook have now a lot to make up for. Hopefully, the rest of the CD will be as good as the single that I've heard on the Net, 'Jin Go Lo Ba'. If not, well, we've still have 1998, don't we?
