Solomon Burke - (Shout! Factory/Sony BMG)

Make Do With What You Got
Bugs Burnett

After 14-year-old Solomon Burke's 1954 gospel album Christmas Presents From Heaven sold a million copies, famed producer Jerry Wexler brought Burke to Atlantic Records in 1960 where they recorded some of the greatest soul records of all time. After Burke's Grammy-winning 2002 comeback with the Blind Boys of Alabama, Burke is back with an album of classic numbers penned by, among others, Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan, Jagger and Richards, and Van Morrison (and if Burke sounds like Morrison it's because Morrison made a career sounding like Burke). He's backed by a crack studio band led by lead guitarist Ray Parker Jr. Every song here is amazing and the album already ranks as one of the best of 2005.

Thank You David Letterman

I have been introduced to many artists through the show over the years from Natalie Merchant to Warren Zevon. The Letterman show has a tendency to book a really diverse group of artists. The moment that Solomon Burke ended his set I thought that I had died an gone on to the heavens! It really, honestly, was that transporting!

This is as good as soul albums get and a testament to those who think that do not make em like they used to. I just cannot recommend it enough. Simply brilliant.
