Album number four for local heroes Shalabi Effect is both a departure from the old and a continuation of the groundbreaking music they've created over the last decade. Unfortunately is the quartet's first "live" record, pieced and patched together from a weeklong stint at MAI this summer. Track 1 (the 13-minute skull shaker Out of the Closet) hints at the new here, a greater exploration of computers and electronics and effected vocals, while track 7 (Harpie) revisits the oud/tabla/guitar terrain we love. Regardless, this is a capture of a group firing on all cylinders, as one.
