Paul Simon - (Warner)

Surprise
Andrea Simms-Karp

Paul Simon sounds like he's had some time to reflect. He is still churning out the clever, catchy songwriting that made him famous, but this album smacks of something new. I'm tempted to call it humility. Simon sounds like he's settling into his own skin - the infectious chorus of Outrageous will have you singing "Who's gonna love you when your looks are gone?" for days. With a little help from Brian Eno, he's successfully mixed smooth production with social commentary - everything from aging to war to God. The result is, well, a surprise. It will easily attract new listeners, and will certainly please the old. Besides, the first time around, you don't even notice he's talking about dying his hair the colour of mud. And even when you do, you will probably just giggle yourself to work.

Simon Says!

Ok, owing to his forthcoming highly-hyped Jazz Fest performance, it's all Paul Simon all the time. From the tribute show that's also planned for the fest, to the ensuing full-throttle media onslaught, Mr. Simon looms larger now than ever before. Mind you, that's not necessarily a bad thing...after all his new CD seems to mark a return to form for the living singer/songwriter legend. Seems that Mr. Simon hasn't been resting on his laurels but rather has grown with his music - it's as topical, socially-conscious, and (humorously) self-introspective as ever - ok that last one might just be a new feather in Paul Simon's hat!
