Foo Fighters - (RCA/Sony BMG)

Greatest Hits
Jamie O'Meara

This is ideal for folks like yours truly, the mostly ambivalent Foo Fighters "fan" who won't allow himself to suffer through a whole album, but who occasionally finds himself tapping a toe or two to the hits when his guard is down and he thinks no one is looking. But when you string tunes like All My Life, Monkeywrench, Times Like These, Learn to Fly and my personal fave, Best of You, back to back, as they do on this 15-track greatest hits package (including three throwaway unreleased tracks), it's easy to honestly appreciate the melodic and melancholic genius in their super-sized production and sound. And not feel foolish for it.

Blast From the Past.

Distilling Foo Fighters to their essence is a great way to find appreciation for the band. Then again, I have a fondness for three chord progressions. I also think that the boys named Foo and even Hole are worthy heirs apparent to the Nirvana legacy. The Foo Fighters, in greatest hits form, are surprisingly vital. And, this greatest hits compilation is a terrific way to get to know the band's pick hits.

Personally, Everlong is their seminal hit, and to get the album cut in addition to a spare and clean acousic take was a treat. They are all there..from Best Of You to My Hero and beyond. And every track is still influenced by Nirvana and the bands of the era like Screaming Trees and punk(ish) bands like Green Day or Rancid.

So give the gift of Dave Grohl for christmas and make someone happy....

Why?

I think bands should be more like Zeppelin...don't release greatest hits albums until you're dead. Guess the record company wanted one so the band was contractually obligated. I would do the same and put throwaways on it too. I have all their albums so why would I buy this? I guess this is meant for general fans. I think I heard one of the new songs...definitely not a stand out track. I'll listen to the new Them Crooked Vultures til the Foos get a new record out.
