I have to admit that it's taken a while for me to warm to this recording by New York-based vocalist Fay Victor. Her mannered vocal approach is a bit of an acquired taste, containing elements (at least to these ears) of Jeanne Lee and Lisa Sokolov. But she and her ensemble of guitarist Anders Nilsson, bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Michael "T.A." Thompson have done a very brave thing in taking a set of Victor's compositions - and quite a varied set they are - and recording them one after another in the studio in what she calls a "stream of consciousness." What you hear on this album is raw and quirky and powerful and full of feeling and surprise and particularities that reflect universal human truths. One of the unique listening experiences of this or any other year.
