Papa Roach - Dreamworks/Universal

lovehatetragedy
Isa Tousignant

Nu metal requires a distinct set of standards, where instrumental originality and lyrical insight (adolescent angst tends to become same-ish) have little import. Entertainment rules this land, as do catchiness and an ability to communicate heightened emotional states to as many people as possible. Papa Roach kicked ass on all those fronts, as well as on the charts and all over a gazillion movie soundtracks, with their debut Infest. On this, their sophomore, a solid if less stellar release, there are a handful of guaranteed hits (Time and Time Again will stick to your brain from the moment you hear it) and good times to be had by all. But mind-altering artistry? No. (Isa Tousignant)

Lovehatetragedy

Like their last album, this album is great. It contains pure emotion. Yes, it's a more commercial album but hard-rock will still be please by the hard beat, good lyrics and awesome riffs. My favorite songs on this are She Loves Me Not and Singular Indestructible Droid. 3/5

Papa Roach - lovehatetragedy

I was very hard on people who liked these guys when they first hit big, with their debut. 'Oh no, another nu-metal band...' - then a friend was nice enough to force me to listen to whole album, and I discovered that these guys rocked! like, really rocked, and knew what they were doing on the title track, and 'Between Angels and Insects.'

Then they released lovehatetragedy, which got a little airplay, but not nearly the share it deserved! i love how they've moved past the teenage angst of their debut, and Shaddix, the singer - in fact, blames himself for not being album to love properly on the song 'She Loves Me Not.'

These guys write huge, thundering riffs, and meldoic hooks that feel oh-so-good. It only gets better folks, take stock in this band!

Much better

After listening to the band's first LP, Infest, I was saying to myself not another one of those rap-rock nu metal bands. Don't the americans have anything better to offer us ?

If is consequently with a pinched nose that I've listened to lovehatetragedy, expecting the worst of stinkers. You know what ? I really enjoyed this record. Instead of searching for that murderous riff or those screams from Jacoby Shaddix (better than Coby Dick, heh?), the guys really took some time to polish their songs. The riffs are not as heavy and loud, but much more hooky and well arranged. Take the first radio single She Loves Me Not as an example. Isn't that a good song ? No. Actually, it's a great song. Simple, back-to-basics rock, but how effective. And what about that Pixies cover, Gouge Away ? It really is surprising to find something this enjoyable.

No changes from a lyrics standpoint it's Destroyyyy !!! through all thirteen tracks, but the quality of the music makes us forget the forgettable.

This album is a collection of songs that contains no stinkbomb and no filling, a delight to the casual rock fan who likes a good old fashioned electric guitar album with fast tempos. There is no need to listen to it 5 or 6 times to jump aboard, the album is likeable to a point where you like it instantly. A great rock record that has no further pretention than the one to entertain and please the masses.
