Farmers oppose Hwy. 30 expansion

Debate is growing around the planned expansion of Highway 30 on Montreal's South Shore as local farmers, whose land is being appropriated by the provincial government for the project, have formed a coalition to publicly fight the construction.

Farmers have joined vocal Mohawk traditionalists from the Mohawk Traditional Council in Kahnawake, who also oppose the highway development.

"This is some of the best agricultural land in Quebec, the soil is excellent in this area," explains Viviane Corriveau from Comité de citoyens(nes) Autoroute 30. "Also, it's really important to understand that the farmers who are being displaced have been working this land for generations now, in some cases for hundreds of years... Their land is precious to them."

Local farmers in the area grow different produce - from blueberries to soya beans - on the hundreds of acres of slotted to become a concrete highway.

As concern for the environment increases both in Quebec and internationally, the Quebec Liberal government of Jean Charest now faces a growing outcry over the project. Environmental organizations opposing the Hwy. 30 expansion project include the Quebec-wide environmental organization Équiterre and Greenpeace Quebec.

"Citizens from the entire area impacted by the highway expansion project are also opposing the development. Residents from Saint-Constant, Delson and Sainte-Catherine are
active within the coalition," says Corriveau. "The environmental impacts on the local lands will be terrible, local residents will experience increased pollution, and generally this project only enforces dependency on the automobile in the Montreal area."

Highway 30 - - Farmers Join Mohawks

The fertile land that the farmers are fighting for and have farmed for hundreds of years is Mohawk land which was lost due to " Jesuits leasing the land ". If the farmers win which is doubtful will they give it back to the Mohawks ?
