Though Margaret Cho still has an ongoing love affair with queer America
Margaret Cho has long been a thorn in the side of Republicans stateside. But never like the summer of 2004 when one day, 10 minutes into her performance at a corporate gig, the hotel manager - offended by her anti-Bush comments - had her microphone cut off and instructed the band to begin playing. That same summer, even Democrats - gay Democrats, no less - whupped Cho upside the head when she was "uninvited" to perform at the Unity 2004 event during the Democratic national convention, a pink power event organized by the gay-rights lobby groups Human Rights Campaign and National Stonewall Democrats.
"It just shows how sometimes Democrats don't know what they're doing," Cho says today. "They don't know how to stand their ground and I think that's really offensive. But I did get an apology and a lot of people got fired."
So I guess Cho got the last laugh.
These days, though, a slimmed-down and happily married Cho has discovered burlesque in L.A. where she now lives with her husband.
"What's bugging me is I can't tour my girl burlesque show to Montreal, but I'll be in Fire Island next week, and my burlesque show is popular here in Los Angeles where our next monthly benefit is for the California Center for LGBT Homeless Youth."
Cho doing burlesque?
"Yeah! I've been a fan of it for years! I do comedy in the show too. I think it's drag for women. I do it myself - it's shocking for gay men to see my breasts!"
Despite her newfound figure, the fat little girl inside Cho won't go away.
"I
think I'll always feel awkward," Cho admits. "But that's okay because it's supposed to be there. It's comforting. There's good things that came out of that, like my brassy sense of humour."About George Bush ("I wish they would impeach him") and hurricane Katrina, Cho quips, "It's so sickening how America doesn't take care of its poor people."
About Rush Limbaugh getting busted upon his return from the Dominican Republic for vacationing with somebody else's prescription Viagra, Cho snaps, "I wonder if he's doing it with Special K at parties, because those are the only people who use it without prescriptions."
When she's not doing benefits for New Orleans or homeless LGBT youth, Cho is shopping in London, Sydney and - yes - Toronto. "I like the whole Bloor Street situation," Cho says, admitting she's become something of a fashion-holic.
But, unlike Montreal, which boasts Boutique Mad-Ame (1276 Amherst), Toronto does not have a lesbian fashion boutique.
"They don't even have one in San Francisco," Cho sighs. "But I love lesbian fashion. It's not just plaid shirts any more. It's Red Wing shoes. It goes way beyond cutting edge. The most fashionable people I know are lesbians."
Which reminds me, when was the last time Cho went down on a woman?
Cho laughs. "I'm married [to a man] for three years, so I haven't gone down on a woman in three years - since my hen night!"
If you think children are next, think again. "I don't want to have a Liza Minnelli!"
Married or not, Cho says she still has a "deep love for the gay community I still feel a part of." In Montreal, the love is mutual.

| I think That Ms Cho is a great. She should be call Margaret The Great |
|
My name is Mill and I am a straight Black American man(African American). I have been following Margaret's career since her first television progam..All American Girl...Where she played a Korean teenager. I think that she is a Great Social Comic. She seem to have her finger on the pulse of the problem. She doesn't say things that some would want to hear. She says things that needs to be heard. She is carrying the torch that Richard Pryor carried. She speaks the truth that Richard spoke. She is appealing to Americans to recogize the social issues with comedy. She is very aware of the social issues...Americans should be tired of Bigotry and racism of any kind to anyone regard of gender, race or religion. In my mind she one of the greatest.

I have to admit that I don't know much about Margaret Cho. My little exposure to her has involved this short lived sitcom about three generations of Chinese women living under the same roof. Cho was the one playing the young daugther. This show wasn't on television for very long (hence the reason why the name of it escapes me now), but Cho definetely had some star power then. Thanks to the Hour, I will be checking her out tommorrow night and I can't wait. The reviews from other commenters also make the show seem even more promising.

Margaret Cho rocks and will always rock. She is one of the few people in this world that has a great way to just tell it like it is. Not for the faint of heart or those who are offended easily. This woman has balls of steel and is an abid supporter of the gay community. She is also a fellow Bush hater and is not afraid to speak her mind about it no matter what the cost. I have seen her 5 times doing stand up and she has made me laugh until I cried just about every time. I got a chance to meet Ms Cho in person and she was everything I anticipated her to be and the sweetest woman alive. If you've got tickets and you've never seen her before, you're in for a treat!

There's simply no stopping Margaret Cho - the stand-up comdienne diva has turned her attention towards burlesque befitting of her role as agent provoacteur and a pefect vehicle to showcase her newly toned form. Mind you, she hasn't turned her back on stand-up - she continues to ply her trade to the howling delight of gay and straight audiences alike as can easily be evidenced by her forthcoming sold-out show at this year's edition of Just for Laughs!

It's Margaret Cho, people...do you really need me to sell you on why she's worth every penny spent to see her live? How often do you get a comic, male or female, gay, lesbian or straight, that just kills on stage time after time? I'm not talking kinda funny or adorable funny but just take no prisoners and let it all hang loose till you're rolling on the floor in cramps because she's just that damned funny. I've seen her before and she's only gotten better with each return. So she's lost some weight and gained a husband...sounds like she's got some new material to riff on to me, don't you think? Some can think of her as a role model and a comic trailblazer but to me she'll always one ballsy broad that knows how to get the laugh. If you've never seen her before now is your chance.

| (((My Two Cents))) - Margaret Cho Brings Her Acclaimed Comedy Show To Montreal |
|
It's Margaret Cho. In regards to stand-up comedy, I cannot say much about her that hasn't been said. She's sold out shows internationally and as a comedian, she is very courageous as she attacks some of the most dangeous and controversial issues. She is a female superhero in that sense. This woman has been performing almost all her life. She started at the young age of sixteen in San Francisco and since then, she hasn't ceased. After that, she joined a college circuit and she was one of the most popular and most of her college shows would actually sell out. Ultimately, she's always been considered a great stand-up comic. Since then, she has been on two sitcoms, has sold a best-selling book, has turned numerous comic tours into best-seling audio CDs, and has become acclaimed internationally. Canada welcomes the wonderful Margaret Cho during this year's Jazz Fest and I guarantee it will surely be a show not to miss.
