"It's an end-of-year celebration of all our dreams that never came to be over the past year," says Eliane Ellbogen, who co-curated the event with fellow artist Monique Mathieu. While Eastern Bloc, an artist-run centre, has hosted and produced events and parties many times before (this fall's Factory Project, for instance), this is their first in-house production dedicated to being an art show.
"There's definitely a bit of a Christmas bent to it - we're aware that Christmas is in a week and a half and there's an intention to go with that celebratory feel of mid-December," says Ellbogen. "The title plays on holiday wishes, best wishes. Wishes are in the exhibition, but not necessarily."
The exhibition combines installation and video work with prints and photography, as well as performances and performance installations. Cassandra Witteman offers an ongoing performance piece, while
Musical performances go on throughout the night, from Jay Gillingham's live mixing to Joda Clement's ambient-noise to a band called Dynamo Coleoptera, described as wacky indie experimental with a bit of j-pop thrown in for fun. Also in the name of fun: music to dance to from DJs Otherpeoplesmusic and Radiate.
It's a night of experimental art with a fun edge. Or maybe it's fun art with an experimental edge. Go, have fun, interpret as you will.
At the Eastern Bloc (7240 Clark), Dec. 13, 8 p.m., $8
