Taking in the designer sites of Portes Ouvertes Design Montreal

Designers open their doors to all for Portes Ouvertes Design Montreal

Every year, due to a few different events around town, Montreal artists open their studios to the public, letting us witness their creative environments up close and personal. But often designers aren't a part of these artist-focused events - thankfully Portes Ouvertes Design Montreal has stepped in on their behalf and designated this weekend as the perfect time for visiting the studios of architects, fashion designers, design agencies and more.

In 2005, Montreal became the first North American city to join the UNESCO City of Design network - recognition that Montreal is right up there when it comes to both public and private section creative design work. During Portes Ouvertes, designers will show their stuff in their offices but also in gallery locations around town, from St-Henri to Old Montreal to the Plateau and beyond.

On Saturday, head to the Canadian Centre for Architecture (1920 Baile) any time between 11 a.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday morning for 20 hours of non-stop activities to celebrate 20 years of the CCA (see www.cca.qc.ca/20 for full schedule). Also check out Harricana's Écoluxe fashion apparel, made from recycled furs and fine materials (3000 St-Antoine W.), Perennia's green, holistic approach to design (4035 St-Ambroise), and exhibitions from the Université de Montréal environmental design program (2940 Côte-Ste-Catherine). And samples of handmade electronic devices and current projects will be on display as part of Electronic
Crafts - and kids of all ages will be led through the process of designing their own electronic works of art/craft (#507-460 Ste-Catherine W.).

On Sunday in the Plateau, a number of local architecture, interior and furniture designers are open for questioning. But be nice, because The Good Conspiracy, a collective project infiltrating public spaces in Montreal, will be all up and down St-Laurent between Sherbrooke and Mont-Royal - they say their goodness will find you, so you don't even have to search them out. Hm. The new Bixi bike service is unveiled at Mont-Royal metro. And urban artist Omen offers a tour of various works that he has painted in Montreal streets (tours depart at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. from Coloniale and Roy Streets).

For all the goods on having a good weekend wandering through the Montreal design scene, see designmontreal.com.

Every year Montreal artists open their studios to the public, letting us witness their creative environments up close and personal but often designers get a raw deal, right? So in an effort to balance things out Portes Ouvertes Design Montreal stepped up and did their part but how exactly is burying the article in the Web exclusive! section supposed to help get the word out? I imagine that the casual reader won't show up because he doesn't know about it because there is no article to read...unless you go online. Shortsighted thinking, no?
