Karilee Fuglem's Connective Tissue, on view at Pierre-Francois Ouelette to June 4

Phew, what a week: Julie-Andrée T. just opened her expo at Optica a Skol, Karilee Fuglem opened hers at Pierre-François Ouellette, and Concordia's undergraduate exhibition Roundup just kicked off at the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery after its highly praised MFA student exhibition Décalage extended its run at Parisian Laundry to today (Thursday, April 28).

And the excitement is just beginning. Tonight there are openings beyond your wildest dreams, including one of the biggest art events in the city this spring guaranteed: the Décarie project at the Saidye Bronfman Centre's Liane and Danny Taran Gallery. The community-art extravaganza - thematically organized around the peculiarities of Montreal's beloved interchange - is a six-week-long happening that includes performances and installations by Diane Borsato, Caroline Hayeur, Devora Neumark, Farine Orpheline, William Pope.L, Althea Thauberger and d'bi.young. Celebrate the launch and learn more tonight, starting at 6:30 p.m.

After that head downtown to VOX, where, aside from launching both their mammoth and beneficial-for-posterity archival project Fonds documentaire (uniting web files on every one of the province's photographers) and their catalogue on Jocelyn Robert, they are celebrating their 20th anniversary no less. The party starts at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, Chants Libres launches its latest performance/installation at Station C tonight too (I swear, arties will have trouble keeping
up today). L'Archange examines total and absolute evil, and the role of the artist in creating beauty out of horror. It runs April 28 to 30, May 4 to 6, and then May 12 to 14 during Elektra. For info: www.chantslibres.org.

And finally, tonight Jerry Snell launches The Passion of Henry, a multimedia performance event involving artists from Vietnam, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium and Chile that excavates the mind of Henry Kissinger. It's at SAT at 8 p.m. (and it's playing again on Saturday, April 30).

Roundup is not for killing weeds...

...although that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the title of the show.
I was at the vernissage (and getting calls from people on my cell asking where I was, so trying to explain what the hell a 'vernissage' is, anyway... apparently it's the same word in Polish), and I wished the student who did the neon light sculpture had had a chance to explain his/her artwork. I remain perplexed on that one.
Loved the photographs on the wall just to the left of the door; they're awesome. The sculpture of the dwarf figure reminds me of my favourite sculpture at the Met in NYC ('Lilith' by Kiki Smith), and the film featuring kids dancing to hip-hop is just plain fun.
It's a mixed bag, and definitely worth checking out. I was too chicken to get into the parachute/body-bag items, but the friend I was with described it as 'like being in the womb.' Get inside the whale, or don't. Hooray for student art!

Paint my World

What a great lineup of art exhibitions! Many people overlook these events when deciding what to do. They are more interested in concerts or movies. I recommend that people broaden their interests and try visiting art exhibitions and vernissages. It will definitely captivate you how talented some really are and open you up to a whole new world.
